PBKS IPL 2026

Punjab Kings — IPL 2026 Squad & Season Analysis

Bottom of the Table. Again.

One win. Five losses. NRR -0.845. Punjab Kings are last on the points table, and anyone who has followed IPL cricket for more than two seasons is not surprised. PBKS have never won an IPL title, made the playoffs just twice in 16 seasons, and have cycled through more captains than any franchise in history. The 2026 season continues this tradition of expensive underachievement.

The auction rebuild backfired. PBKS purchased 18 new players — the most of any franchise — in the hope that a complete squad overhaul would break the cycle. Instead, the lack of continuity has produced confusion. New players don't know each other's strengths. The batting order changes every match. Even the captain, Shreyas Iyer, looks uncomfortable leading a team where he knows half the dressing room by first name only.

Squad Review: Individual Talent, Zero Cohesion

Shreyas Iyer's 189 runs at SR 134 are respectable individual numbers. The problem: he's scoring runs in losing causes. Four of his five 30+ scores came in defeats. Iyer's tempo doesn't match PBKS's needs — when they need acceleration at 12 RPO, he bats at 8 RPO. When they need him to anchor, he plays a rash shot. The captaincy pressure is affecting his batting decisions.

Jonny Bairstow is the one genuine positive. His 205 runs at SR 151 include a 43-ball 78 against GT that was the best IPL innings nobody talked about (because PBKS still lost). Bairstow's power against pace in the powerplay — SR 168 in overs 1-6 — gives PBKS the explosive starts they desperately need. The question: how long before frustration with losing causes Bairstow to disengage mentally?

Bowling is the disaster zone. PBKS concede an average of 186 per match — worst in IPL 2026. No bowler has an economy under 8.0. Arshdeep Singh, their best death bowler, has an economy of 9.8 in overs 17-20. The lack of a quality spinner means PBKS leak runs in the middle overs (average conceded: 58 in overs 7-14) where other teams tighten the screws.

IS Bindra Stadium (Mohali) Pitch Report

The IS Bindra Stadium pitch report shows a pace-friendly surface with good bounce and carry. Average first innings score: 170. The extra bounce at Mohali suits fast bowlers — historically, the venue has produced some of the best pace bowling performances in IPL history. Unfortunately for PBKS, they don't have the pace attack to exploit their own home conditions. The irony is painful.

Punjab Kings vs Mumbai Indians match scorecard history shows MI dominating 17-9 in 26 meetings. PBKS vs CSK is even worse — CSK lead 16-8. Against the traditional powerhouses, PBKS have been regular victims. Punjab Kings vs Chennai Super Kings match scorecard records reflect a structural quality gap that no single auction can close.

Betting Perspective

Avoid PBKS for match-winner bets. Their 17% win rate is the worst in IPL 2026, and their remaining schedule includes trips to Chennai, Mumbai, and Kolkata — three of the toughest away venues. The one exception: PBKS at home against other struggling teams (DC, SRH) offer occasional value when odds drift too high. Their NRR of -0.845 eliminates any mathematical playoff possibility — season is effectively over.

For individual markets, Bairstow as top batsman and Arshdeep as PBKS' top wicket-taker offer better value than team results. Back the individuals, not the team.

Season Outlook

Playoff probability: 2%. PBKS are eliminated in all but name. The season is about pride, development, and auditing the auction strategy for 2027. Expected finish: 10th. One of the most disappointing campaigns in recent IPL history — not because of the results, but because the investment deserved better.
